He was drafted by the Chicago Bulls with the 18th overall pick in the 1989 NBA Draft and played for the Bulls, Golden State Warriors, and Toronto Raptors during his 12 year career. Armstrong is a three-time NBA champion and was named an All-Star in 1994. He was also the first African-American player to win the NBA Sportsmanship Award.
